Product Owner Training Through Simulation

Most Product Owner training teaches backlog theory: how to write a user story, how to prioritize with MoSCoW or WSJF, how a Sprint Review should go. What it rarely teaches is the discomfort of doing it live, when the team disagrees with your call and a stakeholder reacts to work they’ve never seen before. ScrumTale puts a Product Owner trainee through exactly that, inside a workshop, before it happens with real budget and real deadlines.

What a Product Owner practises in ScrumTale

  • Prioritizing under real ambiguity – the Backlog is a set of story elements, not a spec. The Product Owner has to decide what fits into a Sprint knowing the story will keep changing underneath the decision.
  • Sprint Review as a feedback session, not a demo – the stakeholder reacts to the story increment as written and can redirect it. Trainees feel the difference between presenting finished work and defending an ambiguous, in-progress one.
  • Saying no – every Sprint has more story ideas than time. The Product Owner has to cut scope in front of the team, not just in a planning document.
  • MVP thinking – the optional Story Mapping extension adds a round focused on identifying the minimum story that still delivers value, directly during backlog refinement.
  • Working the boundary with the Scrum Master and the team – the game separates the three Scrum roles clearly, so a Product Owner trainee also sees where their responsibility ends and the team’s self-organization begins.

How to use it for Product Owner training

ScrumTale isn’t a certification and doesn’t replace a CSPO or PSPO course. It’s the practice a certification doesn’t include: running the role once, in a low-stakes setting, before running it for real. Trainers use it as a standalone session for new or aspiring Product Owners, or as part of a full team workshop where the Product Owner trainee plays the role alongside a real Scrum Master and Development Team.

Run it in person with the ScrumTale Box or remotely with the Online Edition. Both keep the same 5-17 participant range and 3-6 hour session.

Frequently asked questions

Does someone need Product Owner experience before this workshop?
No. ScrumTale is designed to teach the role from zero, and works just as well as a first exposure to product ownership or a refresher for someone who has done it in theory but not under real pressure.
Can ScrumTale replace a Product Owner certification?
No, and it isn’t meant to. ScrumTale doesn’t issue a Product Owner certification. It gives the hands-on practice of running the role that a certification course typically doesn’t have time for, so many trainers use it alongside or after certification training.
Can one person play the Product Owner while the rest of the team learns Scrum generally?
Yes. Scrum roles (Product Owner, Scrum Master, Development Team) are assigned per team at the start of the workshop, so a training focused on one Product Owner trainee still runs as a full team simulation for everyone else.
